I will be the first to admit that while our house is full of books and bookworms who love them, I do not have a clue about how to teach my children to actually read on their own. Some of the things that we're doing to encourage literacy: read to the girls daily, point out letters/words/numbers on signs or in flyers (this is actually how I discovered that Rowan can identify numbers, she started pointing them out on price signs one day), visit the library so they can pick out their own books, have Read more [...]
I had never heard of 'stropping' (the proper term for sharpening something) until a few weeks ago when I read online that you can actually sharpen disposable razor blades at home, easily, using an old pair of jeans. I was skeptical but I figured it was worth a shot, because those razor blades are getting expensive and they don't seem to last nearly as long as I think they should!
I cut somewhere around 2-3 inches off the leg of an old pair of jeans. Hold it so the seams are at the sides. Then Read more [...]
My favourite part of fall is that it feels like 'tea season' to me. There is the perfect clutch for a quick run to the grocery store where I'm just bringing keys and my wallet (check), a perfect cross-body bag for a morning at the museum that involves bringing some snacks and maybe a small camera (check), but what I was missing was a bag that was large enough to take to my classes at night but wasn't so big that I over-pack Read more [...]
I'm starting to believe it when I hear "cherish these years, they go by so fast". It feels like just yesterday that I had a toddler and a newborn, and even though they're only 3 and 5 now, our lives are becoming a whole new kind of busy and I think the years are really going to start flying now! I know that lots of kids hold signs for their 'back to school' pictures now (I haven't been on the ball enough to do it myself but I love the idea) and one thing that is on many of those signs is what Read more [...]
