We watch a lot of Food Network. It’s always safe to have one when the kids are around and it frequently inspires a dinner menu. Here are a few of our recent favourites: We were watching Pioneer Woman the other night – it’s Ashlyn’s favourite show because it’s on a farm and she has a lot of kids – and Ree made salisbury steak which I’ve never had before. Silly me, I actually thought that it was steak, not ground beef! I was skeptical but it was delicious, especially with the cornbread muffins Read more [...]
I posted on my personal Facebook page a few weeks ago that my house smelled amazing thanks to the pulled pork that I had in my slow cooker and after some friends asked for the recipe, I said that I’d blog it. It’s one of those recipes that was photocopied from a photocopy and is stained and a little crumpled from all of the use that it gets so I had to do a bit of searching to figure out where it came from. Turns out it was included in a book called “The 150 Best Slow Cooker Recipes” by Judith Finlayson. Two Read more [...]
I can’t explain it, but I think food is just better if you can dip it. Veggies, chips, even sandwiches are tastier if there’s something yummy to dunk them in. I’ve had a recipe for a beef dip that you make in the slow cooker in my recipe book forever and yet somehow I had never made it before. I recently rediscovered it and decided to give it a try; it involves beer (which we don’t drink, we’re wine people) but it has a very nice flavour and doesn’t taste like beer at all. It was a winner, Read more [...]
It’s been cold and rainy and very “fall” like around here and I wanted to make some comfort food for dinner the other night. This recipe comes from the mom of a childhood friend of mine; I actually had to call my mom to get it because I’d lost my copy and nothing that I could find online sounded right. The secret ingredient? Chow mein noodles! TUNA NOODLE CASSEROLE Ingredients 1 can cream of mushroom soup 3/4 can milk 1 can tuna, drained and flaked 1 stalk celery, chopped 1 small Read more [...]
Rowan has started solids now and she enjoys food far more than her sister did at this age so I’m doing my best to come up with healthy and tasty recipes for her in the hopes that she will be a less picky eater. I’m at our local Loblaws at least once a week as it is, so I was very interested to learn that there are *free* HUGGIES® Baby and You in-store events happening right now across the country! Between October 18th and November 2nd, each event will highlight a dish for Mom (Quinoa Pancakes Read more [...]
We usually eat something with the buns, but I could easily make an entire meal out of them! With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I made a double batch yesterday so that I could have enough to take to both of the family dinners that we’ll be going to, plus a few left for us. I was very intimidated to try homemade buns for some reason, but my good friend Tasha sent me her recipe and it’s so much easier than I thought it would be! I don’t buy dinner rolls any more and it sounds very impressive Read more [...]
My husband made some cornbread a few years ago and still talks about how good it was…except that for the life of him, he can’t remember where the recipe was from. He was very happy when I came across this recipe the other day and decided to make it last night. Thanks to my friend Emily for posting the link on her Facebook and letting Ashlyn and I sample some at our playdate! I made a couple of minor changes to the original so below is how I made it, and will make it again. This makes Read more [...]
This past weekend, we hosted our very first Christmas for my husband’s family. This is the first time in six years that we’ve been in the same province as our family for the holidays and we were so excited to have everyone to our home and to prepare a traditional Christmas dinner! I got this brine recipe from my Aunt Jina, who is definitely one of my “go to” people for excellent recipes. As always, I was not disappointed! My husband helpfully told me AFTER I’d put the turkey in the brine Read more [...]
Like many of my favourite recipes, this one came from my good friend Joleen. I’m not sure where she got it from, but I’m very glad she shared it! This Sassy Turkey Soup is easy enough to make after work (as long as you’ve precooked your turkey), and it’s a different spin turkey soup for those inevitable leftovers once Thanksgiving is over. Serve with some biscuits and dinner is done! Ingredients 2×14 1/4 oz OR 1 796ml can stewed/diced plum tomatoes 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth 1/2 Read more [...]
Ok, technically it’s what’s for lunch, but the chili was dinner last night. The baked potatoe was an impulse buy when I was grocery shopping at Farm Boy yesterday. This is my chili recipe, which is basically an amalgamation of my mom’s chili, my aunt’s chili, and what my husband and I added along the way. It freezes great so I always make extra for a night when I don’t have the time or energy to make a meal. Ingredients 1 lb extra-lean ground beef 1 onion, diced 1 green pepper (this time, Read more [...]
