My new craft obsession: crochet

Last spring, I decided that I was going to learn to crochet. Not because I was feeling like I didn’t have enough to do already, but because I wanted to have a hobby that was 1) easily portable, 2) not on the computer, and 3) productive. A friend lent me “Stich ‘N Bitch Crochet: The Happy Hooker” by Debbie Stoller and I watched some YouTube videos and slowly figured it out. Here’s what I’ve made over the last few months! This doll boots pattern was my first attempt. The ones on the top were Read more […]

How the week got away from me

It seems strange that it’s only Thursday night and yet it feels like the week is already over! We had a busy Sunday that included dinner with friends and the morning spent at the Carleton University Butterfly Show. This is an annual event and we try to go every year. This year it was just the girls and I and we remembered to bring our own orange slices to try and entice some butterflies to land in our hands. The girls found the experience to be magical! The rest of the week has been a blur Read more […]

How to sharpen your disposable razor using an old pair of jeans

I had never heard of ‘stropping’ (the proper term for sharpening something) until a few weeks ago when I read online that you can actually sharpen disposable razor blades at home, easily, using an old pair of jeans. I was skeptical but I figured it was worth a shot, because those razor blades are getting expensive and they don’t seem to last nearly as long as I think they should! I cut somewhere around 2-3 inches off the leg of an old pair of jeans. Hold it so the seams are at the sides. Then Read more […]

Mommy’s home alone

It seemed like this day would never come, and yet here I am, sitting in silence. For the first time since I became a mom 5.5 years ago, I will have some child-free time during the day. Ashlyn is at school all day and today Rowan started her one morning a week at nursery school. I expected to really enjoy the silence, but I’m missing my little companions! I’ve decided to make this time productive by using it to volunteer at Ashlyn’s school library starting next week. I’ve put a lot of time Read more […]

New (school) year resolutions

I have a confession: I don’t get the whole “New Year’s Eve” hype. January 1 doesn’t feel any different to me than December 31 did; I don’t feel motivated to make changes or that I’m starting with a clean slate. September, though? September is my New Year. New season, new courses for me, new activities for the girls. New stationary at every turn; pens and highlighters and Post-It’s just begging to be bought at bargain prices. This is when I make plans to work more (ok, any) exercise into Read more […]
