I’ve made a turtle cake and a duck cake for Ashlyn’s birthdays but I was having a hard time deciding on what to make for Rowan. Thankfully I found a guide on how to make an owl cake on Pinterest and I knew what I wanted to make for Rowan’s first birthday! I started with my carrot cake recipe and made 2 9 inch round cakes. That was the easy part!

While they cooled, I attempted my template. Basically, you trace the bottoms of the cake pans (I have a lot of 9 inch pans for some reason so I used the ones that were not hot from the oven) onto some parchment paper and intersect them about half way or so. One cake will stay whole, the other will become the head and other parts: wings, ears and legs.

You can see my failed attempt at tracing the pans the first time through the paper, hense why I traced over the ‘good’ copy in marker. Then I cut out my template and when the cakes were totally cooled I used them to cut out all of the pieces. Next I pieced together the owl and did the quick and dirty icing.

I also used a few things I had around the house (ie some of the girls play food) to act as the templates for the owl’s eyes and belly. I just stuck the play food on top and used a toothpick to poke holes around them so I’d have a guide for my frosting.

Ashlyn had to get in on the icing of the cake. I can’t do anything in my kitchen anymore without my little <del>shadow</del> helper at my side! We decided on a purple owl with a pink belly so I separated the cream cheese into 3 portions: the largest was purple, then 2 smaller plastic sandwhich bags of pink and white.

I used an offset spatula and one of those little spreaders that I think are meant for appetizers at dinner parties but it’s what I had and it worked! I cut the tips off of the plastic sandwhich bags and used them as piping bags. After I was done with the eyes I added some yellow colouring to do the little beak. Ashlyn added 2 chocolate chips to the eyes and I added a little bow to put the candle in and ta da! A cute owl cake for the birthday girl.

I started with a plain, $4 t shirt from Walmart that has a tulle bow at the neck.

Next I raided my scrapbooking supplies for a fancy button and some ribbon. I cut a 1.75 inch length of thin ribbon and attached it to the shirt when I sewed the button on to make the candle.

Then I cut 5 pieces of ribbon to 1.5 inches to make the ‘wrapper’. I used a bit of scrapbook adhesive to keep the bottom together than pinned it at the bottom and used another pin to keep it in place on the shirt.

Then I sewed along the sides and bottom to attach it to the shirt. I also did a stitch at the top where the candle meets the wrapper to keep it in place.

I didn’t bother doing the top because I figured adding the ribbon ‘icing’ would take care of that and I don’t sew any more than I absolutely have to! I couldn’t take pictures as I did the icing because I didn’t have enough hands. I was trying to do a bunch of cute loops but I failed pretty badly; I just couldn’t figure out how to sew them properly. In the end, I used about 12 inches of ribbon and did an accordion fold, sewing through each fold as I went. Then I sewed it into place. Voila!

It didn’t take very long to make - maybe 2.5 hours total - and would have taken far less time had I not been parenting while crafting, and if I sewed more than twice a year. I can’t wait ti put it on the birthday girl next week!

With less than 2 weeks until Rowan’s first birthday, I thought I’d better get crafting! I started with a reusable birthday banner. I considered taking a ‘before’ picture of all of the elements that I was going to use but decided that it would be pointless; what I think I’m going to do and what I end up doing when I get scrapbooking are two totally different things.

This banner cost me nothing to make since I had all of the supplies in my scrapbooking stash, but you could make it fairly inexpensively. I used 4 sheets of 12×12 paper (could have used 3), 28 eyelets, some ribbon, a cereal box, some stick-on jewels and a lot of glue.

The first step was deciding on a shape for the background pieces. Once I finally settled on a cupcake, I picked 2 shapes (a hexagon and a flower) from my Accent Essentials cartridge for my Cricut to make the cupcakes and got cutting. I used one paper for the ‘cups’, and 3 different papers for the tops: 1 pattern for HAPPY, 1 for BIRTHDAY, and 1 for the space between the words.

The hexagons were 4 inches and the flowers were 4.5 inches. I cut all of the shapes in half using my paper trimmer and started assembling the cupcakes.

I loved how the paper looked with the shapes cut out and I kept it to use as a scrapbook page later!

I used a font from the Sophisticated Cricut cartridge to cut out HAPPY BIRTHDAY (3 inches) and a crown to go in between the words. I wanted a font that was pretty but still easy for kids to read, since Ashlyn is starting to notice letters and words. I sprayed the letters with a glitter spray to make them a bit fancier.

And then I used a gold glitter spray and some jewel stickers to finish the crown.

I was worried that the paper alone would be too easily ripped, so I opened a cereal box flat and glued all of the cupcakes to it. Next the letters were glued down. I also added one jewel sticker to each letter to hide where I ripped a couple of them taking them off the Cricut mat. That’s why I love scrapbooking – there are no mistakes, just changes in the plan!

Once all of the cupcakes were cut out of the cereal boxes, I added eyelets with my Crop-A-Dile tool.

I cut the ribbon into 4 inch lengths and tied the letter together. I also put 12 inch ribbon on each end so I can tie the birthday banner to something if I want to.

And here’s the finished product! It only took me a few hours off and on and I’m so pleased with how it has turned out.

I can hardly believe it, but Rowan will be turning one in just a couple of weeks! We’re not having a big party, just a play date with our friends that involves cake (and probably balloons) but that hasn’t stopped me from gathering ideas from Pinterest.

I love this birthday shirt and might just try to make one myself:

Source: naptimecrafting.blogspot.com via NotJustBabyBrain on Pinterest

Then there are all the fun decorations. A good friend of mine used this tutorial to make a balloon banner for her little guy’s first birthday this past Sunday and it turned out great, so I might give it a shot myself:

And I have more than enough scrapbooking supplies to make a re-usable “Happy Birthday” banner!

My biggest indecision is what sort of cake to make. I have made Ashlyn’s first and second birthday cakes and had no problem deciding what theme to pick, but for some reason I’m really stumped for Rowan. Owl? Cat? Bunny? A simple 1? I just can’t figure out what to do and I’m running out of time!

You always hear about spring cleaning, but for me the cleaning bug always seems to hit mid-winter. I think it’s because when the weather is nice we’re not spending much time inside, but now that it’s cold and icy/slushy/snowy outside we’re inside most of the time and the clutter has more opportunity to make me crazy enough to actually do something about it!

My first order of business was to organize Ashlyn’s craft stuff better. I had it all in 2 plastic totes on top of our pantry and it wasn’t working at all: things didn’t fit, the boxes were heavy and hard for me to get down, and everything got lost inside. I had a storage unit that I used to use for scrapbooking that was free, so I brought it into the kitchen.

All of the things I don’t want her to have free reign over are in the box (paints and play dough, mostly) and everything else is sorted by drawer: crayons, stickers, colouring books (2 drawers), paper (2 drawers), paint with water books, random craft stuff like pompoms and googly eyes, her beads (we like to sort them by colour in mini-muffin tins, or string them on pipe cleaners to make headbands or necklaces), and then her smock and paint trays (re-purposed dollar store ice cube trays).

A far bigger project has been my scrapbook desk in the basement! Jordan picked up the storage cubes (there are 6 of them) at Michaels, then built a desktop over them. The bookcase is Ikea, we have at least 4 of them in various places in our home!

I cannot wait to get scrapping and use my brand new Cricut! I have all of my papers sorted and I even went through all of my scraps to sort them – that was interesting. Not sure what I was thinking keeping some of those teeny pieces of paper.

I feel so much better having a better organized kitchen and craft area. My next project will be tackling that mess of a bookcase on the right!

I am constantly putting up new pictures in our home, and I love ‘themed’ picture frames – seasons, holidays, you name it and I want it. The problem is that they can be really expensive, and where do you store all of the Santa/Christmas/Easter/Valentine’s Day/Halloween/etc frames for 50 or so weeks a year you don’t have them on display? Not to mention that I never know if the picture that I’m going to want to display will be landscape or portrait!

I decided to get a teeny bit crafty and use some scrapbook papers to change up a simple frame that I found at Michaels (on sale, of course). The frame is 8×10 so I can use it with 4×6 or 5×7 pictures and still have some of the paper showing. For their Santa picture, I picked out some die-cut snowflake paper.

While I had intended to use the snowflake frame for the rest of the winter, when I saw this damask paper I had to take it home! It’s actually a transparency, not die-cut.

(picture in the frame taken by Elizabeth Fulton Photography – I apologize for the colouring on my picture but I was having a heck of a time getting the white balance right and the flash was making the pattern look crazy so this was the best I could do)

I’ve started a file to keep the papers that aren’t being used in; this way I can keep them to reuse whenever I get the whim. I may even try adding coloured paper behind the die-cuts or transparencies to mix things up a bit. Cheap, easy, and immediately gratifying – just how I like my crafts!

Every year I get a new ornament for our tree. My mom always got me and my brother an ornament and it was so special for me to have a tree full of ornaments with memories attached to them when I moved a few provinces away with my then-boyfriend (now husband). I’m continuing the tradition for my girls, but this year I changed it up a bit and had them help me make ornaments that will help us to remember just how small they once were.

This is Ashlyn’s ornament:

Basically, you cover the child’s hand in white paint and have them (carefully) grab the ornament. Let it dry and use markers or paint to draw faces on the ‘snowmen’ and decorate as you like.

And this is Rowan’s:

This is even easier – just flatten some clay (or in my case, Crayola Model Magic), press baby’s hand into it to get a lovely handprint, cut out using a cookie cutter, punch a small hole at the top for the ribbon - I used the end of a paintbrush - and let dry. If the handprint doesn’t work out the first time, just re-roll the clay and start again. I painted Rowan’s handprint with a bit of sparkly paint to give it a bit of dimension.

These also make great presents for grandparents and are easy enough to do in the days leading up to Christmas!

It’s become an annual tradition (two years in a row makes something a tradition, right?) for some of my girlfriends and myself to meet at a B&B just outside of Edmonton for a weekend of scrapbooking, eating and catching up. We used to all live in the same small town in Alberta but now only one of us still lives there; the rest are at least still in the province.

Last year I was pregnant so I was able to have a much enjoyed break; this year I packed up all of my scrapbooking essentials, plus my clothes AND Rowan’s clothes and snacks and toys and diapers into one very large, VERY heavy bag and flew off for a girl’s weekend away with the baby in tow. Luckily, Rowan was a really good traveller overall and was very cooperative while we were there, so I actually got 8 pages done – that’s more than last year! – and had a wonderful visit with friends that I had been missing.

As we were leaving, one friend asked if I was going to blog about them. I said I would, then realized I had taken 1 picture the entire weekend – of Rowan on her first flight. I really should have taken a picture of all of the food, not to mention all of us hard at work! Oops. Instead, here are the layouts that I finished:

Now that I’ve gotten back into scrapping, and I got to play with lots of fun new things, I’m inspired to get my craft area in the basement all set up and to find a great store (or two!) in the Ottawa area that specialized in scrapbooking. If you know of one, or of a great online store, leave me a comment!

The texture was fun for Ashlyn and she even enjoyed making a mess (she’s a very clean girl most of the time). I really liked that I wasn’t worried about clean up since it wiped off the table without a problem.

The easiest way to clean up a toddler after some pudding finger paint fun? A dip the backyard pool, of course!

I made Ashlyn’s turtle cake for her first birthday, so of course I wanted to make her second birthday cake this year. She loves rubber duckies so I thought that would be a great cake to help us celebrate. Using the same carrot cake recipe as last year, I used a small glass measuring cup for the duck’s head and a small loaf pan to make the body.

Once the cake had cooled I put it in the fridge overnight. I made cream cheese icing, then put about 1/2 cup aside to use for the eyes and beak; the rest I coloured yellow using food dye. The next day I cut it as best I could into a duck shape and did a crumb coat with the yellow cream cheese icing.

It went back into the fridge for a few hours, then I did the final icing and added chocolate chips to the eyes.

The rest of the cake batter was made into cupcakes to share with her little friends the next day at her birthday playdate. I found little rubber duckies to put on top, which I thought was a fun touch.

I thought it turned out pretty cute and I was excited to show it to Ashlyn on her birthday! She loved it when it was on the counter but as I got closer with it, she started to get more upset. Check out the look on her face here!

As a little back-story, last week we were watching a Food Network Challenge that involved Dora. One baker made a giant Dora (I think it was about 4 feet tall) and to the horror of Ashlyn (and I’m sure other children), the head fell off. For a week now, we’ve randomly been hearing “Dora. Head. BROKEN!”. Once she figured out that she was supposed to eather beloved rubber duckie, it was over. She could not get out of her seat and away from that cake fast enough! Now we also randomly hear “Daddy eat duckie HEAD! Ashlyn no eat cake!”

Cake fail. Next year, I’m sticking to a rectangle with a three on it!
