Disney’s Pete’s Dragon is available now on Blu-Ray + DVD and Digital HD, and it would make a wonderful present this holiday season! I grew up loving the original 1977 “Pete’s Dragon”, which I watched on VHS (and sang along to and cried over) many a time, so when I heard that they were remaking it, I really couldn’t figure out how it would work. Disney took the same basic story – a orphaned boy befriends a dragon named Elliott, who no one else can see – but took out the songs and the abusive adoptive parents and added a whole new level of magic to the movie!
We saw this movie as a family this summer and my daughters were enthralled. This is another one that I have been hearing “When can we buy it?” for months! There are some parts that my daughters found scary, such as the car crash at the beginning which orphans Pete, and whenever anyone was hunting Elliott, but it wasn’t anything that some snuggles couldn’t fix. I think seeing it on a television at home will also help it to feel less scary than a giant movie screen! The movie is set in the 1970s, so there are no smartphones or other means of current technology to contend with, and my husband and I both commented on how the movie felt simple and calm in the best possible way. It was interesting and gorgeous to watch, but not frantic or loud or overwhelming like some movies can be. It captured and kept all of our attention while we watched it, and we’re looking forward to another family movie night to watch it again. My daughters love bonus features, so the music videos and bloopers will be must-see entertainment too!
