We survived Mud Hero Ottawa 2016!

As I mentioned last week, my family was participating in Mud Hero Ottawa on June 4. My husband and I were a part of his work section’s team and both girls wanted to do the kids race. My parents came up to watch the girls and snap a few pictures for us while we did our wave.

It all started off so well. A beautiful, sunny, not too hot day! Our wave started at 10:45 so after getting all 4 of us checked in, the girls went with my parents and we met up with the rest of our team to get ready. I’ve never done anything like this before but I did watch last year when my husband and the girls did the Badass Dash and had promised then that I would join them this year. I was hoping that my recent running training would be helpful, and it was, but this was so much harder than I thought it would be!

The hardest part for me was the uneven terrain for running. It was a lot more work than my usual runs – and I specifically trained on a trail that had different surfaces and elevations – and I think I was going a bit faster than usual to try and keep up with my husband. I tripped over a root and fell during the first forest run, but I didn’t get hurt and kept on going. The first mud obstacle really got me – I’m short to begin with, but I lost my footing and ended up a mud monster!

The entire course was 6km and I was feeling it by the end, but my husband stayed with me and everyone was so encouraging the whole time. When I tripped, a stranger checked to make sure that I was fine. When people got stuck in the mud, whoever was close would help. Tips on how to best climb up the ropes were exchanged. It was a really positive atmosphere!

The mud slide was the most fun, especially because it meant that we were almost at the finish line! It took us 1:06 to complete the Mud Hero course; I know my husband could have done it much faster but it was really awesome to do it as a team. Next year I hope to do it in an hour or less!

The ‘after’ shot, I did it! ???? Thanks for a super fun day @mud_hero! #mudhero #mudheroottawa #ottawa #fun #obstacles #getactive #getoutside

The girls were fairly unimpressed with their experience at the Badass Dash last year (the youngest division was too easy for Rowan and Ashlyn wasn’t tall enough to do the bigger course on her own since it was the adult-sized obstacle), so I was really hoping that Mud Hero Kids would be the challenge they were looking for. It most certainly was! The Mud Hero Kids course was designed specifically for kids, so everything was their size, and it had easy and hard options so every kid can have the level of challenge that they want. Plus, there was a giant mud pit at the end!

I went through with Rowan and my husband went through with Ashlyn. A huge, unexpected bonus was that the kids were allowed to run the course as many times as they wanted! Rowan went through twice (total of 1km) while Ashlyn did it three times (total of 1.5km) and I’m sure she would have gone again but we were desperate for a shower at that point!

I was pretty sore for two days but that’s to be expected when you aren’t used to slogging through giant mud pits. We all had such a good time that we’ve already signed up for Mud Hero Ottawa 2017!

Looks like fun we have a local mud color run locally here to honor a fallen from our school district. He graduated with my one niece and was brother to one of my nephew’s friend. He played almost all high school sports and had baseball as his favorite.. The kids enjoy the mud run , then like a family run finally full on mud run and the rest of the day is spent paying baseball in the park. Families can come together and that’s what the family wanted.
