It’s summer, which means that the latest Marvel blockbuster is due! Ant-Man hits theatres today, July 17, and my husband and one of his friends were more than happy to attend a special advance screening on my behalf. In case you aren’t familiar with Ant-Man, like me, here is a little about what to expect from the movie:
“Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.”
So what was the verdict? Both men agreed that the performances were solid, particularly Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, and Evangeline Lilly (who plays Hope van Dyne). The visuals were top-notch, especially the scenes where Lang is ant-sized. The 3D was used to great effect but if you prefer not to wear the glasses, watching it on a regular screen would still be impressive. Paul Rudd plays to his strengths as an ‘everyman’ and there were multiple times when the audience laughed out loud. The only downside was that the villain was fairly one-note, which is unfortunately fairly typical for a Marvel movie. The heroes tend to be given very deep back stories and motivations, while the villains are not given the same treatment. Even so, they both enjoyed “Ant-Man” and think that it will do very well this summer!
