Sphero Ollie (#giveaway)

2014HGGButton

When I was approached about including the Sphero Ollie, the robot that is controlled by an app for your Apple or Android device, in my Holiday Gift Guide, I did not hesitate to say yes! Oh, not for my daughters, or even for me. This little guy will be wrapped and under the tree for my husband (now is the real test of if he reads my blog, isn’t it!). A mere 9.96″ x 4.84″ x 4.29″ inches and 1.3 pounds, Ollie is going to be hours of fun for our whole family because there is no way that the girls aren’t going to want to ‘help’ their dad drive a robot around the house!

In the interest of writing a proper review, I charged up the Ollie one afternoon and got started. Assembly takes about 30 seconds: you pop the rims, nubby tires and hubcaps on each end of Ollie and he’s ready. Then download the free app from iTunes App Store or Google Play and you can get started.

For the tech fans, here are the specs:

  • iOS & Android compatible
  • Goes over 14 mph (6m/s)
  • Durable polycarbonate body
  • Built-in LED glow
  • Bluetooth LE instant connection (100 foot range)
  • USB charging (over 1 hour of drive time on a full charge)
  • Driving apps: Ollie, Draw N’ Drive
  • Programming apps: MacroLab, OrbBasic
  • Hackable and programmable internal robot
  • App updates that introduce new features and gameplay
  • Automatic firmware updates

To be completely honest, I have no idea what most of that means. What I do know is that the Ollie was lots of fun to try and play with, and I managed to master a couple of spin tricks pretty quickly. I have a terrible time trying to drive anything with a controller – no matter how hard I try, they always end up under furniture or stuck in a corner – so I can’t wait to see what my husband (and the girls) will be able to do with Ollie!
