I’m so lucky to have a handy husband! We bought the Ikea SUNDVIK children’s table two years ago for Ashlyn’s birthday and while it’s still in great shape, it doesn’t seem as big now as it once did. I remember when we could get 6 toddlers to sit around it for snack time and now my own two daughters can barely share it when it comes time to do crafts. I thought about buying a second table and sitting them back to back, but this one table fits perfectly into the space that we have for it, and buying a larger table would cost more than I care to spend on a table that is covered in marker, stamp ink, glue and sparkles on a daily basis. I asked my husband if he could build a new top for our existing table, but then I had a better idea – what if he could build some sort of shelf or something to hold the craft supplies so the girls had the table surface free? I picked up an EKBY HEMNES shelf in the same gray-brown finish and this is what he came up with.
You can see that he attached the new shelf to the existing frame and notched out the sides to make it fit flush. I’d meant for him to take pictures as he went but he did this so fast I didn’t get a chance to ask him before he was done!
The pink craft supply station is from Target. I found it in their outdoor section and I’m pretty sure it’s meant to hold silverware/napkins/condiments, but it’s the perfect size for markers, crayons, Disney princess pens/tape/scissors, and the large section holds most of their stickers. Everything is in one place and now it’s easy to reach but not in the way of the artists and their creations!
I still need to find some matching stain to finish off the cut sides and it will be done. I’m so pleased with our $20 solution for our too small craft table!
