The Robot Birthday Party That Wasn’t

My littlest girl turned 3 last month. THREE! It’s pretty crazy that we’re a ‘kid’ household instead of a baby or toddler house now. Someone was pretty proud of herself for finally turning three, you know, since she’s been telling everyone for months that she was either three or four.

We had big plans to have a fun “play date with cake” birthday party for Rowan in her favourite theme: Robots. My husband made a game for the kids to play by cutting robot pieces out of random scrapbook papers I had on hand and then tracing the whole thing on a large piece of paper. We hid the pieces around the house and the kids were supposed to find them and reassemble the robot. One arm was already hidden when I took this picture.

Next up was the cake. Over the years I have made Ashlyn a turtle cake, a rubber duck cake, and a princess cake (one year we did ‘decorate your own cupcakes’) and Rowan has had an owl cake and an R2D2 cake. This year I baked a yellow velvet cake in a 9″x13″ pan and a 9 ” round pan. Once it cooled, we started cutting. The end of the rectangle became the arms, while the top and bottom of the circle became the treads. We had picked up some candy for decoration at Bulk Barn so we placed some on the cake to get a sense of where we liked them before the icing went on.

The cake board is a large circle of cardboard that was left over from our Norio Kids Playhouse, covered in tin foil. The next day I iced the robot cake with cream cheese icing and put all of the decorations on. Everything was ready for the party…until Ashlyn got sick with a gastro bug that has been going around Ottawa lately. The party had to be cancelled and because it was the last day of March Break, we weren’t able to reschedule because our friends already had weekend plans and all of the big kids were back to school the next week. Thankfully, Rowan was happy with her presents, a helium balloon, and of course, her cake.

We also did some cake delivery to our closest friends over the weekend to share this guy, because our family really didn’t need such a giant cake all to ourselves!

Sorry that Ashlyn got sick and it was a real a shame that the party had to be cancelled at such short notice. I hope Rowan still enjoyed her birthday, she was definitely pleased with her cake :-)
