It’s so easy for kids to get caught up in the ‘getting’ part of the holiday season. I remember talking with my mommy friends last year after Christmas and we were all lamenting how our 2.5 year olds had suddenly developed the “gimmies” after spending a few weeks celebrating with various family members and friends, and I have a feeling that this year is going to be even worse since I’ve been hearing “I want that for Christmas” about every toy we see in a store/flyer/commercial for weeks now and it’s barely past Halloween!
We’re doing our best to teach our girls the value of giving but it’s an on-going challenge. The biggest thing that Ashlyn loves to do for any occasion is make a special card. She’s even been known to show up at random play dates with a card or drawing for her friends! She also loves to bake so we’ll be making lots of Christmas cookies together to give to our friends and family.
Now that she’s getting a bit older I’m making a point bringing her with me when I shop for presents, frustrating as that can be, because I want her to understand that finding just the right thing for someone can feel as special as opening a present for herself! A new tradition for us will be having each girl pick out a new toy that we will donate to Toy Mountain. Rowan is too young at 1.5 to understand this, but I think that Ashlyn is old enough at 3.5 to understand that we can help a little boy or girl her age to have a better holiday through our donation. I’m sure it won’t stop the “gimmies” but I’m hoping that it will help to instill some gratefulness for the presents that she will receive!
