40 Love was the first book that Madeleine Wickham actually wrote, long before she established herself as a go-to author for fun, chick-lit books like her Shopaholic series (under the name Sophie Kinsella).
“At their country estate, Patrick Chance and his wife make a fateful decision to host a seemingly innocuous weekend tennis party – “seemingly” being the operative word here. As the four couples gather on the sunny terrace over the brilliant weekend, it becomes quickly obvious who among them is succeeding and who has fallen on hard times. However, after two days of tempers, shocks and revelations (as well as the appearance of an uninvited guest), nothing in their pecking order will remain as certain. While the couples’ children amuse themselves with pony rides and rehearsals for a play, the adults suffer through a series of personal crises and long-simmering battles that have nothing to do with the matches on the court. Wickham’s nonstop action reveals at every turn that nothing in this social circle is as it appears, and in the end one thing is crystal clear: the weekend is about anything but tennis.”
This is my favourite type of book for the summer (or those first few weeks of fall, when you’re desparate to hang on to the summer!) – funny, gossipy, and the kind of characters that interest you from the first page. I’m having a hard time putting 40 Love down!
