My daughter has had a full mouth of teeth for months now, but actually brushing them can be a challenge. As a toddler, of course she wants to do it herself, but she can’t really work a regular toothbrush. Add to that the difficulty of finding an appropriate toothpaste that doesn’t contain sugar or fluoride and it becomes tempting to just wait a little longer. That’s not a good idea though – proper oral hygiene should start before those first teeth even poke through the gums!
For review, I was sent the Baby Banana Brush and Strawberry-Banana Tooth Gel kit by Xlear Inc. Included in the kit is a full tube of their Strawberry-Banana tooth gel and a banana-shaped silicone toothbrush. I also received a tube of their regular flavoured tooth gel.
What makes the Spry strawberry-banana tooth gel different from other products you may have tried for your children? This is all-natural, with no unnecessary ingredients. This is the entire ingredient list: purified water, Xylitol, calcium glycerophosphate, cellulose gum (thickening agent), natural strawberry and banana flavoring, and grapefruit seed extract (as a preservative). As the Spry dental defence system website explains it:
“Our delicious all-natural gel with no additives or artificial sweeteners, has been formulated for maximum dental benefits. When applied to the teeth, Xylitol may promote optimal calcium absorption and the development of tooth enamel. Kids love the natural Xylitol-sweet taste.
Spry offers the proven benefits of Xylitol. It cleans gums and teeth and promotes a positive oral environment for the healthy development of emerging teeth when used as part of a complete oral hygiene program.”
This sounds great, but how does it really taste? And more importantly, would my stubborn little girl give it a try? This picture was taken literally minutes after I opened the package. As soon as she saw that banana she had to have it!
I managed to hold her off long enough to get the strawberry-banana tooth gel onto the brush, then let her have at it. As you can see, we never made it out of the living room with the kit! I tried a dab of the gel myself and it was very nice, not overly sweet but flavoured enough that I can understand the appeal for youngsters. We’ve been using the tooth gel for a week now and it’s still as popular as it was the first day it arrived. In fact, not only do I not have a problem getting her to use the brush and tooth gel, I actually have to keep them both shut away in the bathroom – as soon as she sees either, she NEEDS to brush her teeth! This would make a great stocking stuffer for a little one in your life this holiday season.
