On (and off) the fitness bandwagon

Like many new(ish) mommies, I don’t look quite the same as I did pre-baby. I know I have a good reason – I did grow a person, after all! – but that doesn’t make not fitting into my old clothes feel any better, you know?

My baby is 6 months old now, so I’m attempting (half-heartedly) to get back into some shape that isn’t round or squishy. Turns out, it’s much harder to exercise when you have an infant demanding your attention! Long gone are the days of leisurely warming up, then jumping on the treadmill for 30 minutes, doing some (ok, hardly any) stretching afterwards, then taking a nice long, hot shower. Now, it’s change at warp speed, get the DVD primed, plunk the baby in the exersaucer/Jolly Jumper/swing, start the workout – stop to pick up a toy – resume workout – stop to get a frozen washcloth for the teething wonder to nom – resume workout – stop to pick up a toy – finish workout, shower at one point, maybe during the next nap.

It’s easier to go for walks instead, but between the torrential rain we’ve been having here in Vancouver – shocking, isn’t it? – and the fact that I usually walk to Starbucks, I don’t think it’s doing enough to qualify as a workout. And between the leftover Hallowe’en candy and the upcoming Christmas baking I have planned, I had better step up my game!
